Black-naped
Tern (Sterna sumatrana)
The
Black-naped Tern is one of the few residential terns which are resident and
nest in Thailand. Its size is approximately 30-35 cm. It has more white feather
than other tern species. In general appearance, a distinctive black band from
eye to nape, black-tipped wings, a black bill and feet, and a fairly long forked-tail
identifies it. The habitats in Thailand range over the Gulf of Thailand such as
Mu Ko Chumphon National Park and Mu Ko Chang National Park, and the Andaman
Sea, including Mu Ko Similan National Park and Hat Chao Mai National Park.
Between
May and August, the monsoon period, the Black-naped Terns breed and lay their
eggs on rocks in the undisturbed islands or coasts. Male and female parents
cooperate in hatching and rearing until their offspring getting strong enough
to follow them for hunting. Their prey are mostly small marine animals
especially fish.
